New phase of Highway 63 construction will add two-hour delay

COLUMBIA –  Drivers traveling southbound on Highway 63 should expect more delays starting Tuesday, May 29. The increased delay is a result of the second phase of the Highway 63 construction project.
Phase one began May 1, for repairs underneath the southbound bridge, which only gave drivers a 10-minute delay.
Joyce McKinley, an Uber driver who travels on Highway 63 Monday through Friday, said she regularly takes the back road to avoid the backup going south.

Phase two of the work underneath the bridge will require crews to close the passing lane of the highway, leaving only one, 12-foot lane open through the work zone until mid-June.

Aaron Peck, Resident Engineer for The Missouri Department of Transportation, said, "With a narrower travel way, people tend to slow down even more and that just in turn incurs further backups up the cue. This is simply just to allow the contractor enough room to do their part of the work."
MoDOT's traffic modeling indicates backups during peak travel times could be closer to two hours. Officials encourage drivers to plan ahead for a longer commute.
"Changing their work schedule, flexing their hours around, trying to drive outside of the peak times is the best way to keep yourself from getting stuck in traffic and having a delay going through the work zone on southbound 63," Peck said.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed July 1.
