New Transfer Policies for Columbia Public Schools
COLUMBIA - If you're looking to transfer your child between schools, tougher transfer policies may make it more difficult.
Administration officials say the new regulations are to prevent overcrowding of schools, but it's also because of a shortage of teachers in the Columbia School District.
Last year, the CSD administration approved nearly 700 transfers. They granted most requests. Middle class families wanting out of low-income schools made the most requests.
If a school faced overcrowding, the administration sent more teachers and made smaller classrooms, but a lack of teachers eliminates that option.
Now administrators say they will allow only special-needs students to transfer. So far this year, only 200 transfers have been granted.
