Nixon Prepares To Present Silver Star Banners To Vets
JEFFERSON CITY - Governor Jay Nixon is preparing to present four veterans with Silver Star banners and certificates Wednesday. The veterans were each wounded, or suffered from illness or injury while serving in combat zones.
Nixon will present the Silver Star to Edward "Babe" Gross, a World War II Army Air Corps radio operator and machine gunner, James Shipley who served as an airplane mechanic with the Tuskegee Airmen, Army Korean War veteran Bill Stroud and Vietnam veteran State Senator Wayne Wllingford.
Governor Nixon signed a bill in 2009 designating May 1 as Silver Star Families of America Day to recognize ill or injured veterans in the state of Missouri.
