Officials want to keep MSHSAA Championships in Columbia
COLUMBIA - The Missouri high school basketball championships are usually held in Columbia. The City of Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) wants to keep it that way.
CVB Director Amy Schneider said the bureau is working on a bid to host the MSHSAA basketball championships for five years throughout 2018-2022. The bid is due in March. Columbia does not own the events, so the events could be moved to other parts of Missouri.
The Columbia Chamber of Commerce said the teams and their fans fill Columbia hotels and spend money on dining, shopping and recreation. The chamber said it creates a "huge economic impact."
A news release from the chamber said the economic impact number for 2015 was nearly $351,000 over two weekends.
"Just the teams alone occupied about 2,000 rooms and there were thousands of families and fans who traveled to Columbia to cheer them on," the statement said.
