One child dead after Phelps County fire
NEWBURG - A 12-year-old boy died in a fire in Phelps County Sunday morning.
The fire started at a home on East 2nd St. in Newburg around 3:30 a.m.
When emergency personnel arrived on the scene the home was engulfed in flames and not safe enough for firefighters to enter.
Phelps County deputies were told the 12-year-old boy was still in the home, but the deputies could not get in because of the fire and heavy smoke.
The Doolittle Fire Department, Rolla Rural Fire Department, Rolla City Fire Department, and St. James Fire Department eventually brought the fire under control.
Three children and a Phelps County deputy were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center for smoke inhalation and burns.
