Overpass Work Could Begin in July
ROCKVIEW, Mo. (AP) - Work to replace a southeast Missouri highway overpass damaged after a train collision and derailment could begin in July.
The Southeast Missourian reports that the Missouri Department of Transportation plans to expedite the bid process to replace the Route M overpass in Scott County.
MoDOT District Engineer Mark Shelton says the goal is to let a contract around July 1 with the target of having a new overpass finished by September.
The overpass was destroyed Saturday after a Union Pacific train struck a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, derailing several rail cars. The derailed cars knocked down one of the bridge support pillars.
The replacement cost is about $3 million. It isn't yet known if either of the railroad company will share in the cost.
