Owls Remain Perfect in AMC with Win Over Harris-Stowe
FULTON, MO -- The William Woods University men's soccer team remained perfect in American Midwest Conference play with a 2-1 win over Harris-Stowe State University on Wednesday night. Danilo Carnelos hit for the game-winner in the 78th minute for the Owls, moving WWU to a perfect 3-0 in league play.
Despite dominating much of the opening half, William Woods found itself down a goal in the 32nd minute, as Zach Bailey was able to capitalize on a misplayed ball by Dillon Klein and slot the ball into the far corner.
The Owls were able to equalize in the 58th minute, as Alan Matthew beat his runner to the near post on a corner kick, nodding home the inswinger from Luca Stroeter.
WWU continued to press the attack, earning the spoils in the 78th minute. The Owls strung together a series of passes deep in the attacking third, with Joao Paulo Parra capping it off with a nifty through ball to a streaking Carnelos. The sophomore lofted the ball over a helpless C.J. Vaccaro and into the back of the net. It would be a fitting curtain call for Carnelos, as he was already set to be subbed out of the match.
The Owls posted a 33-2 shot edge in the match, with 14 shots on goal. Although the foul count was relatively even at 17-16 WWU, the visitors saw four yellow cards to none for William Woods.
A quick road stint awaits the Owls on Saturday, as they travel to Lindenwood University-Belleville. Kickoff for the match is set for 1 p.m.
