COLUMBIA - Parents came together Thursday night to learn how their children will be taught about sexual abuse in Columbia Public Elementary Schools.  Around 80 parents came to Paxton Keeley Elementary to review the sensative material their children will learn about in school.

Susan Perkins, the Columbia Public Schools guidance counselor coordinator said, "We try to present them with exactly what their children will be presented with in the classrooms."

Parents were split up by the grades of their children so they could be taught age appropriate material related to sexual abuse.

Kevin Marquette, a parent of two 5-year old girls said, "It's a chance for me to see how the school system is teaching our kids about what's safe and what's not safe."

Each parent was given a packet of information on sexual abuse prevention. After reviewing the packet they either watched a movie or read a short story book depending on the age of their child.  The guidance counselors for their age group do an overview with the parents about how their children will be taught this information.  This way the parents know exactly what their children will be learning.  This knowledge can make it easier to talk to children about sexual abuse.

Marquette said, "Well now that I can talk to them in the same language, it's going to be easier on both of us."

Sheetal Shah said, a parent of an elementary student said, "I'm not faced with any of these problems right now but for the future it's better to be prepared."

The three main points of the classes will be; say no, get away, and tell a trusted adult.  The material will be used throughout this school year.  Parents will have another opportunity next school year to view the sexual abuse videos and literature.
