Pence: Dems opposition to Kavanaugh is reason to back Hawley
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence says Democrats' opposition to the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is one more reason for voters to oust Sen. Claire McCaskill and elect Republican candidate Josh Hawley.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that Pence accused Democrats of employing "search and destroy tactics" against Kavanaugh during a private fundraiser Monday in Springfield for Hawley. Pence also praised Hawley as a "man of principle."
Hawley is the Missouri attorney general. He told the crowd of about 200 that Democrats mounted a "smear campaign" against Kavanaugh and will move to impeach Kavanaugh if they win in November. McCaskill said previously that although she opposed Kavanaugh's confirmation, she would "never consider" impeaching him.
The outcome of the Missouri race could be pivotal to party control of the Senate.
