Pettis County Prepares for Storms
"Everybody goes to, you know they congregate at the school house when a warning comes in. And it's not a very safe place because there's no basement in the school house, and if a tornado or major storm came through it would take the building out anyway," said Pettis County resident Jerry Beck.
Planning for the shelters is underway, even as the county waits for the grant money. The plans show the shelter will look like a walk-out basement. Each one will contain two toilets and house about 1,000 people. Residents said the shelters are a good idea.
"I think it would be a good thing, I hope we never need them but I think it would be a good thing," Pettis County resident Charles Bond said.
The shelters are expected to take about three years to finish.
