Phone Scam Targets Ameren Missouri Customers
ST. LOUIS - Ameren Missouri is warning customers of a phone scam that uses intimidation and other similar tactics to convince customers to give away confidential information.
The reported incidents involve phone calls from scam artists who threaten to disconnect electric service unless a payment is made immediately. The caller then asks for the customer's credit or debit card information.
In one reported incident, a commercial customer said she received a call at her business. The caller said her account was delinquent and she had to pay immediately over the phone. She provided debit card information to make the payment but afterward became suspicious and cancelled the transaction.
Ameren Missouri offered these tips against scammers:
· Never give your credit card, debit card, Social Security, ATM, checking or saving account numbers to anyone who comes to your home, calls or sends an email requesting this information.
