Police: Child was in back seat during fatal confrontation
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A 5-year-old girl was in the back seat of the car involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting in suburban St. Louis.
The shooting happened Saturday in Wellston. The suspect, 34-year-old Thomas Allen Jr., died a day later.
Allen was a back seat passenger in a car stopped for failing to signal and an illegal turn. St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman says the driver and a front seat passenger were out of the car when Allen tried to drive away, with the girl still in the back seat.
The officer was able to get into the car. Schellman says that fearing for his and the child's life, the officer fired three shots at Allen, who crashed.
The officer was treated for a leg injury. The child was unhurt.
