COLUMBIA - Police arrested a man Thursday after he reportedly tried to set a fire at the home of his girlfriend.

According to the Columbia Police Department, Brendan Whitworth went to the woman's home and tried to talk to her after she tried to break up with him. The woman called the property manager after Whitworth started banging on the door and refusing to go away, despite requests from both to leave. They said Whitworth had a lighter and some clothing in his hands.

A short time later, the woman and manager found a small fire at the bottom of the stairs leading to the woman's home. Firefighters had the fire out by the time police arrived, but said the flames were inches from a wooden porch, and could have caught the home on fire.

Whitworth, 30, was booked into jail and is there on $10,000 cash bond. He has been charged with harassment and trespassing.
