UPDATE: Arnold police officer who was shot has second surgery
JEFFERSON COUNTY - An Arnold Police Department officer was shot while transporting a burglary suspect to be processed. The details in this report were provided by NBC affiliate KSDK in St. Louis.
Ryan O'Conner, 44, was shot in the head, according to the Arnold Police Department. As of Friday morning, he was in critical condition. Police said the suspect, 29-year-old Chad L. Klahs, had a gun in the back seat.
The car O'Conner was driving crashed into a large tank outside the police department.
Police said Klahs ran into the woods and other officers followed. He was later found with a gunshot wound, but it is unclear whether he was hit by someone else or shot himself. Klahs was taken into custody and transported to a hospital where he died.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Gary Higginbotham said Klahs had a long criminal history that included unlawful use of a weapon. The mug shot on this story is from a previous arrest.
O'Conner had surgery the night of the shooting. He then had a second lifesaving surgery, according to a KSDK article published Friday morning.
O'Conner has served with the Arnold Police Department for two years. Before that, he was with the St. Louis Police Department. His law enforcement career spans two decades.
