Police Union Asks that Columbia Chief be Fired
COLUMBIA (AP) -- The union for Columbia police officers is asking the city manager to fire police Chief Ken Burton. The union's executive director, Ashley Cuttle, says the union met with City Manager Mike Matthes Wednesday. She cited what the union calls Burton's lack of response to complaints within the police department. The Columbia Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/IbFbbA ) the union also cited comments Burton made during a recent radio interview, blaming many of the department's problems on command staff. Burton said he thinks most of the officers support him. He also said he believes the officers who are most vocal are having a hard time adjusting to being held accountable. The chief said the department will continue to work toward improving and addressing recommendations made in an organizational report.
