Police warn residents about phone scam
JEFFERSON CITY - The Jefferson City Police Department warned residents about a scam over the weekend.
Police said people were receiving calls from scammers telling them they had won $5 million. Scammers were telling residents to send between $100 and $10,000 to claim their winnings.
The police department reminded citizens not to send money to any type of sweepstakes or lottery that claim payments are necessary to receive winnings.
The department said it has received reports of similar scams recently, but this appears to be a new scam.
Police recommend people contact the Better Business Bureau for their area to ask questions and check validity of companies and individuals.
