Police: Woman shot in head during chase after drug deal
ROLLA - A drug deal turned violent Wednesday night, leaving a woman hospitalized with a gunshot wound to her head.
According to the Rolla Police Department, officers went to Phelps County Regional Medical Center for a report of a 21-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her head. The woman was later airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia.
Police said the shooting happened on Highway 72 near Osage Drive.
According to investigators, the victim and another person were in one vehicle and were being chased by a second vehicle. During the chase, someone in the second vehicle shot at the victim's vehicle; one shot hit her in the head.
Police later arrested Steven Debord, 43, of St. James, and Joseph Vance, 37, of Rolla, on suspicion of assault, armed criminal action, and distribution of a controlled substance.
Rolla Police tell KOMU that the victim suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and had surgery Wednesday night.
This incident is still under investigation. The Rolla Police Department, St. James Police Department and Columbia Police Department have assisted the investigation.
