Possible Bioterrorism Study Center for Columbia

The 100-acre site is along New Haven Road, which is southeast of the city. Missouri is competing with 17 other sites around the country.

A national bio-and agro-defense facility would examine ways to protect U.S. citizens from bioterrorist attack. MU is leading the effort in a partnership that includes Washington University and Saint Louis University. One of the biggest factors for site selection is the community's acceptance of the facility, but some neighbors are worried about what will go on in the center. Some of them told us last year they will fight the proposal.

Federal officials will narrow the list to 3 or 5 sites this summer. The final decision will come in October 2008. The Department of Homeland Security will review the proposed site when it visits Columbia on May 10th and 11th.
