Prosecutor Undecided on Retrying Dale Helmig
LINN, Mo. (AP)- A central Missouri prosecutor said she has not decided whether to retry Dale Helmig for his mother's 1993 death. The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld two lower court rulings throwing out Helmig's murder conviction for the killing of Norma Helmig.
That high court's action means Osage County prosecutor Amanda Grellner has 180 days to decide whether to retry Helmig. If not, he remains free.
Grellner told The Associated Press on Wednesday she will first consult with the Missouri attorney general's office, which helped prosecute Helmig. The attorney general's office unsuccessfully appealed last November's ruling by a judge in DeKalb County that Helmig's first trial was improperly tainted.
