COLUMBIA- Protestors rallied Thursday night around the country in support of protecting the Robert Mueller investigation.

The rally came after Attorney General Jeff Session's resignation Wednesday.

Protestors in Columbia came out with signs and shouted chants wanting to protect Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

“We believe that the investigation should be allowed to continue unfettered. And want to make sure that our leaders in Congress and in the Trump Administration know that we are concerned about that,” said Kim Wade, one of the organizers of the local rally.

Wade said she’s been following the special counsel investigation and hopes that it comes to a conclusion.

“We are a nation of laws, not men. And that concerns all of us. It concerns Republicans. It concerns Democrats. It concerns Independents. This is a moment for all Americans to stand up and say, 'let an independent investigation continue,'” she said.

About 580 people signed up to attend the rally according to the "No One is Above the Law" website, but only about 100 people braved the cold.

“I’m not standing here against Trump or against anyone in particular. I’m standing here for rules for the basic rule that there are consequences to actions and if you stand in the way of justice it needs to find its way home,” said protester Conner Ruhl.

Acting Attorney General of the the United States, Matthew Whitaker, is set to oversee the investigation, but he's been accused of having bias towards the investigation.

Trump tweeted Wednesday: “We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well... We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date.”
