Public Works Wants to Prevent Sidewalk Stumbling
COLUMBIA - The rough-looking sidewalks on the east side of Columbia could get a makeover this year. Wednesday the Department of Public Works will discuss the details in a meeting in Columbia.
Some of the sidewalks set to be made stumble-free are along Broadway, Bass Avenue, Melbourne, Waugh, Windsor, Ripley, Locust, and William streets. City officials say they chose the Melbourne area because when it's warm outside, lots of people take afternoon strolls on the sidewalks.
The project will be funded by the Community Development Block Grant, totalling about $300,000.
At the meeting Wednesday, the public can offer input on the project. If everything goes smoothly, the department officials will submit the plan to the City Council. After that, construction work can kick off and the sidewalks could be finished by summer of this year.
