Q and A

- Did you start your blog, karisblog.org, when you started your church? Yes- Why did you decide to blog? I saw it as a good way to communicate with people in the church. I was making copies of articles all the time and handing them out, but I realized that I was beginning to shred too many trees. Therefore, I started emailing out blog updates. As a pastor of Karis, I see myself holding the Bible in one hand and reaching out to culture with the other. It is with this "other" hand that I can show how the Bible applies to all of life. I use my blog to point out things in culture, and to encourage my congregation to think critically about them.- Is your congregation primarily younger, and if so, do you think it is important to use this new technology to keep their interest/facilitate discussion? Yes, my congregation is primarily younger. I do think it is very important. I really think that a church today needs a sharp website, a professional podcast and a quality blog to be taken seriously by a lot of younger people. I think it's tantamount to not painting your church building or having a poorly painted sign in previous generations. I would bet 90% of people visit my website before they visit my church. This is a reality that we have to deal with as pastors.- Is it a good way to reach other people and get them interested in your church? It can be. Since most of my posts amount to cultural commentary, they allow people to gauge where you're coming from as a pastor and what kind of church you are starting. - In your opinion, as a pastor and church leader, how has technology benefited churches? It has certainly made communication simpler. It prevents me from spending all day on the phone, for sure. I say e-mail has a "hot potato" effect. I shoot somebody an e-mail, and instantly, the "ball's in their court." They have to respond. It is so much easier to communicate this way. However, I say the trade-off might be more tragic than we know. The web, blogging, podcasting, as well as email, make it more difficult to establish true biblical community with people. On one level, you can communicate more easily, but on another, you wonder if you truly communicate at all. If the Bible portrays the church as a group of people in a city sharing their lives together, electronic communication can help that, or it can totally kill it. It's great if someone can download the podcast if he misses a Sunday, but the downside is that he may see no need to come for worship at all.
