Quadriplegic Overcomes Challenges

Before he was lifting weights, Kevin Brown was a football player. As he grew, so did his activities, including swimming, skiing and golfing.

But, his strength from beyond the weight room is Brown's life-changing story, after he almost died in a crash.

"I was on my motorcycle, going down a rural Missouri road," Brown said. "I was cruising along, not really paying attention, and I went down a hill and came up another hill. And, at the top of that hill, the road curved to the left. I went off the road and into the ditch. I started tumbling and flipping. The bike rolled, and stopped, and boom! It crushed my neck. The next thing I noticed was my breath going away."

Brown was face down in ditch with a 1,000-pound motorcycle pressing on his neck. The bike crushed his spinal cord and paralyzed him from the shoulders down. He could not move or see the road, and no on was expecting him for hours. Brown thought he would die alone.

That's when Brown heard four words, "What can I do?"

"I started breathing again and I said, 'You did it. You saved my life,'" added Brown.

A passerby saw Brown's helmet on the highway, lifted the heavy motorcycle off his body, and called for help.

The 1993 crash made Brown a quadriplegic and doctors told him he'd never walk, work again or have a family.

His doctors also told his wife she had to feed, clothe and bath him.

Brown spent the next six months in a Colorado rehabilitation clinic. But, his desire to take care of himself went well beyond the time he spent there.

It took Brown four and a half years, but he can move his arms, plus do things doctors said he'd never do.

"They said we'd never have a family," Brown explained.

But, several years after his near-fatal crash, he and his wife decided to try.

"In two weeks, my wife was pregnant," said Brown. "You asked me what made the difference. That was the switch. That was a big life switch. It was not about walking. That's not what it's about. It's about living."

His daughter is seven years old. Brown heads Shae Communications, his mentoring and coaching firm. He calls obstacles what you see when you take your eyes off your goals.

Brown's a motivational speaker who also co-owns the 63 Diner. He's written several books and plans to have his autobiography published later this year.
