Quilters honor mid-Missouri veterans at quilt show this weekend
COLUMBIA — A group of mid-Missouri women hopes their quilts will warm your heart this weekend. The Heart of Missouri Quilt Guild and the Patriot Piecers will honor U.S. military veterans Saturday and Sunday at their first ever quilt show.
The Patriot Piecers is a local Quilts of Valor Group, which gives hand-stitched red, white and blue custom ‘Quilts of Valor’ to mid-Missouri veterans who were nominated to be honored.
Jan Hobbs is a member of the Heart of Missouri Quilt Guild as well as the group leader for the Patriot Piecers. She is married to a navy veteran and has several military veterans in her family.
“These veterans are so special. They have done so much for us, that this is a tiny little piece of appreciation for all that they have done,” said Hobbs.
She looks forward to the quilt show where Quilts of Valor will be on display.
The Patriot Piecers presents quilts to veterans a few times a year, and Hobbs has many favorite memories from these events.
“You cannot be at one of these award ceremonies without Kleenex. The veterans tell amazing stories about their history.”
People can nominate mid-Missouri veterans deserving of Quilts of Valor at the Heart of Missouri Quilt Guild Show. The show, displaying over 150 quilts made by these mid-Missouri women, will be at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at VFW Post 280. The guild will raffle off an American themed quilt and vendors will sell various sewing items. Admission is $5 and proceeds will go to mid-Missouri veterans.
