Rehabilitate with Love
Matthew Kurz can't talk or move on his own because of a severe head injury, so family and friends gathered Monday at Rusk Rehabilitation Center to celebrate his 18th birthday and high school graduation.
Kurz is a talented artist who received his school's Leonardo Di Vinci Award. Paige Roberts began dating Matthew one month before the crash and remains by his side.
"If I was in this situation," she explained, "I'd probably want somebody to stay with me and I really do love him."
Roberts hopes she and Matthew have a typical teenage relationship some day.
"Maybe go to the movies like we did before and just hang out and talk for a long time," she added.
Medical insurance covers Matthew's treatment, but the family faces another financial burden.
"One of the things they need is a home that is totally accessible from the handicap standpoint," said Bob Boone, fundraising coordinator.l
Kurz faces an uncertain future, but his family said he can count on their continued love and support.
