Remembrance and Protest
Peaceworks sponsored a gathering at Stephen's Lake Park to remember those who died at Hiroshima. It is the 21st year Peaceworks has sponsored this event. Many of the people who attended decorated commemorative lanterns as part of a Japanese tradition. The lanterns were lit and floated across Stephen's Lake to Represent the souls of those who died.
"Especially in the dark it's really moving to see these lanterns sort of floating across the water and to think of lives lost. But also see those lives as light, as something hopeful. That we can both mourn the passing and have hope for the future at the same time," said Mark Robertson of Peaceworks.
Peaceworks also sponsored an advertisement that will run in the Columbia Tribune tomorrow calling for disarmament. The ad features more than 1,600 signatures from Columbia residents.
