"We thought it was going to hit farther north of us," said resident Mary Biere. "By the time we got to the highway, there was a rolling cloud in front of us."

The tornado demolished 8 homes in Renick, including Biere's mobile home. The twister also heavily damaged 10 others.

About 200 volunteers from as far away as Illinois are helping with the cleanup.

"Everybody is so good," said Biere. "The Red Cross has helped, they've fed us at the school, and we're just so thankful we have our lives."

Gary Campbell of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief added, "It's an opportunity for volunteerism. It gives you a good feeling when you can help someone else."

Churches, restaurants and local businesses also are reaching out to Randoph County residents.

Renick officials say relief efforts such as clearing trees and lumber will continue through this weekend, but they need water and sport drinks for volunteers.

Call Renick City Hall, at 1-660-676-4672, if you want to help.
