Republican Randy Asbury drops out of race for governor
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Former Republican state Rep. Randy Asbury was dropping out of the 2016 race for Missouri governor Friday.
Missouri Republican Party Chairman John Hancock said he spoke with Asbury and confirmed Friday that Asbury suspended his campaign.
In terms of fundraising, Asbury was trailing behind other candidates hoping to replace Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon, who was barred from seeking re-election because of term limits.
Asbury faced what could be a crowded GOP primary. Former Missouri House speaker and U.S. attorney Catherine Hanaway, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and state Sen. Bob Dixon were still in the running Friday. Former Navy SEAL Eric Greitens was expected officially announce Saturday. Suburban St. Louis businessman John Brunner said he's making an announcement in October.
As of Friday, Attorney General Chris Koster was the only Democrat to say he plans to run.
