CREVE COUER - Missouri's Republican lawmakers gathered Tuesday night to watch election results come in.

The party started at 7 p.m. and is expected to end by 11 p.m.

Currently, Republicans hold a super-majority in Missouri's Senate and with a victory in a House special election Tuesday night, they regained their super-majority in the House.

Rep. Jeff Roorda, D-Jefferson County, and Rep. Jill Schupp, D-St. Louis County, are both current state representatives running for seats in Missouri's Senate. Roorda told media during last year's legislative session that these are two of the biggest races because they could help eliminate Republicans' super-majority.

Roorda is looking to replace former state Senator and current Missouri Labor Department Director Ryan McKenna.

John R. Ashcroft, the son of former Missouri governor and U.S. Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, defeated two other Republican challengers and will face Schupp in November's general election. The winner will replace current Sen. John Lamping, R-St. Louis County.

Ashcroft spoke to the Republicans at the watch party and said he could not have made it this far without his family by his side. Republican U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner said she is thrilled for Ashcroft and also said it is a huge step for the Republican Party.

Republican Charles Basye defeated fellow Republican Betsy Phillips and will face current state Rep. John Wright, D-Rocheport, for the seat in Missouri's 47th House District. That district includes Rocheport and parts of western Columbia.

The seat for state Senate district 10, which now includes Mexico, Fulton and parts of Jefferson City, is also up for grabs. That race pits two current state representatives against each other: Ed Schieffer, D-Troy and Jeanie Riddle, R-Mokane.
