Rock Bridge player and coach named Sportsperson of Year
COLUMBIA - University of Missouri women's basketball incoming freshman Sophie Cunningham and Rock Bridge High School coach Jill Nagel were honored with the Kiwanis Club of Columbia Don Faurot Sportsperson of the Year Award on Tuesday.
"It's been amazing," Cunningham said. "We've done a lot together, accomplished a lot and I wouldn't want anyone else up there beside me."
The duo led the Rock Bridge High School basketball team to four consecutive state titles.
"I don't get this award if it's not for the players, so to have one of your players be someone you're rewarded with is extremely special," Nagel said. "Sophie's not only a great player, but a great person as I tried to allude to. Just an all-around great person. Someone who we want someone to look at Rock Bridge Girl's Basketball and see that she emulates everything positive about our program."
This is the first year that two recipients received the award. Cunningham, who was named a McDonalds All-American in January, is also the first high school athlete to win the award.
Named after Mizzou's former football head coach and director of athletics, the award was established in 1991 to honor an outstanding candidate who contributes to the local sports community as an athlete, coach, administrator or official.
