Rookies power Royals to series win over first place Indians
KANSAS CITY - There is no doubt that the 2018 season has been a lost one for the Kansas City Royals. Entering this weekend’s three game set with the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians, Kansas City trailed Cleveland by 35.5 games in the division. After rookies Ryan O’Hearn, Ryan Dozier and Heath Filmyer led the Royals to a series victory over Cleveland though, Royals’ fans everywhere should have smiles on their faces.
Friday was shaping up to be yet another heart breaking loss for the Royals, but back to back ninth inning home runs by rookies Ryan O’Hearn and Hunter Dozier gave Kansas City an exhilarating 5-4 walk off win.
O’Hearn continued his hot weekend on Saturday as he drove in three runs and led the Royals to a 7-1 win. Rookie starting pitcher Heath Filmyer outdueled Indians ace Corey Kluber tossing six innings while scattering three hits and just one earned run.
After four straight losses, two of which to the last place Royals, the first place Indians decided that enough was enough, as they used a five run in fourth inning to win 12-5 on Sunday. Second baseman Jason Kipnis had a banner day, going 4-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. After Kansas City starter Jorge Lopez cruised through the first three innings, Cleveland got to him with the aforementioned five runs in the fourth. Lopez hit the showers after just four innings and five earned runs. First baseman Lucas Duda had three of the Royals’ five RBI’s.
