Running For Rainbow House
COLUMBIA - The 13th annual Jeff Shikles Memorial 8K run kicked off early Sunday morning, but there was a lower turn out than expected.
The run started and ended at Gentry Middle School. The race started at 8 a.m. and went until approximately 10 a.m.
Event volunteer, Elda Kurzejeski said the event started 13 years ago but the idea came before then. Jeff Shikles talked about wanting to put together a race that would benefit others. Unfortunately, one of the volunteers at the race said Shikles passed away after an accident involving one of his horses.
After his passing, The Columbia Boonslick Kiwanis Club put together the memorial 8K run. The first year the race took place, Kurzejeski said about 100 people showed up to participate. All of the money went to an education fund for Shikles's children. This year all of the money is going to the Rainbow House.
