JEFFERSON CITY - The San Diego Police Department's Honor One vehicle, a mobile tribute to fallen servicemen and women, will make a stop at the Missouri Law Enforcement Memorial in Jefferson City Thursday.

"Families get an opportunity to come and remember in a large group, because the families need some closure, but they have to make sure they're never forgotten, that their loved one did mean something, and so we continue to try to make them aware that we care," said Lt. David Williams with Jefferson City Police Department.

Jefferson City was chosen as one of 16 stops across the nation because it's a capital city and because of the police force's commitment to its fallen officers.

"They realized that we have a memorial here, that we've been actively participating for a number of years, so they though it would be good to show that as they came across the country to stop at some of the other states that have memorials and were active in honoring the people that have lost their lives," Williams said.

This is only Honor One's second cross-country trip. The first was in 2015, reaching 13 states and traveling 6000 miles. With three more states on the schedule, the round trip this year will reach over 7000 miles.

"It's really rewarding and encourages you to continue in law enforcement, especially with everything that's been going on in the past year and a half," said Mike Pidgeon, director of San Diego Police Officers Association.

San Diego PD planned this trip for Honor One as a way to commemorate Jonathan DeGuzman, a San Diego officer killed in the line-of-duty in 2016. His name was added to the California state memorial this month and will be added to the national memorial in Washington D.C.

"We wanted to have the car there as a symbol of our commitment to him," Pidgeon said.

Pidgeon, one of three officers driving Honor One across the country on trip, said this trip is for all the hard working, honest officers with integrity and values who have lost their lives.

"Whether you are from a police department in California or a sheriff's department in Missouri, all those losses, those people deserve to be remembered," Pidgeon said.

The trip will last a total of 19 days, going from Sacramento to Washington D.C., with several stops including North and South Carolina, Kansas, Georgia and Louisiana.

Honor One will make its stop in Jefferson City around 2 p.m. Thursday.
