School Bus Stop Out of View Raises Concerns

COLUMBIA - Every morning Shamise McClain sends her eight-year-old daughter, Timmesha, out to walk to the school bus stop. It may be only a one-and-a-half block walk, but Timmesha is walking to a street over and out of her mother's view.

"I cannot watch her when she is on the bus, walking to the bus, because there are trees and houses in the way," McClain said.

The McClain's live on Bellview Drive.  The stop is on the corner of Bethany Drive and Scott Boulevard.

At the beginning of the year McClain would go to the bus stop with her daughter, but she now has an infant she needs to stay with.

"I have a newborn, and I can't because of the weather," McClain said. "It is so cold, and I really don't want to risk getting my newborn sick."

McClain has called the school district and the bus company about creating a bus stop at the end of her street several times, but she hasn't seen any results.

"I pretty much have been told that I'm going to get called back and no one calls me back," McClain said.

Columbia Public Schools Spokesman Michelle Baumstark said the bus routes are planned out and approved each year to ensure the best possible routes.

"That stop is located at the end of a neighborhood street, so it does make the most sense as far as efficiency and being able to pick up all of those students at one stop to have that stop be located where it is," Baumstark said.

McClain is still concerned about having her daughter waiting along Scott Boulevard out of her sight.

"She is just standing out there out of my view," McClain said. "If anything were to happen I wouldn't even know about it because I can't see her walking to the bus stop or standing at the bus stop. So yeah, it really upsets me."
