Scorching Heat Dries Up Funds
But, people stuck in a hot house can't afford to turn on the air conditioning if they can't pay their utility bill. The Salvation Army is one place that helps people pay for utilities. But, the hot weather already has dried up this month's money in Columbia.
"We assisted 22 people with utilities that would benefit from it in those 10 households, and already the money is gone," said Maj. Violet Windham of the Salvation Army.
Windham said there won't be any more help until next month's budgeted money is available. But, she added, the Salvation Army also plans to open its shelter for people who need to get out of the heat.
