COOPER COUNTY - A no-kill animal shelter hired a new executive director to oversee its program this month.

Kathleen McKinney will now head Second Chance, an animal shelter just west of Columbia in Cooper County.

"I am excited for the opportunity to further my relationship with Second Chance," McKinney said in a news release. "I am committed to our organization's mission and hope to continue to improve the great work we do for homeless animals and for our community."

McKinney worked as a volunteer with Second Chance for three years before moving into the new role May 1. According to the organization's website, McKinney has a degree in biochemistry from Westminster College and a Master's Degree in Public Health from MU.

McKinney will work alongside Interim Director Kerri Burrows through May.
