Senate Clears School Budget
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Additional money for public schools clears the Senate. The chamber today passed its version of the supplemental budget. It covers expenses that were not accounted for last spring when lawmakers passed the state's $21 billion budget. It covers the fiscal year ending June 30th. The legislation adds nearly $39 million to basic aid for public schools. But the Senate changed the budget plan the House passed earlier. Key among them is cutting out money for the state to purchase more medication in case of a flu pandemic. Some expressed concern about the $8.7 million cost, when the medicine's shelf life is only a few years. The Senate also cut out millions in back payments for ethanol incentives.
