Senate Votes to Restrict Immigration
Senators today gave initial approval to a bill allowing the Highway Patrol to work in conjunction with the U-S Department of Homeland Security. The measure also includes new penalties on government contractors who hire illegal immigrants.Republican Bill Alter of High Ridge sponsored the measure, saying it could help stem the tide of illegal immigrants flowing into the state. Opponents argued it would put Missouri on the harsh side of a national debate over how to treat people who entered or stayed in the country illegally. The bill needs a second vote in the Senate to move to the House.
