Shelter Move Makes It Hard on Homeless
COLUMBIA - Missouri United Methodist turned on the heat at its new homeless shelter Wednesday afternoon. The problem for some is that the new shelter is not downtown anymore.
"It was very convenient. The people were very nice there," one homeless man named Mike told KOMU 8.
The shelter is now on Old Highway 63. That is a mile and a half walk from the church on Ninth Street. The church is too busy to house the shelter this year.
"It is awfully busy, and we did it there because we didn't really have another place for it," Methodist Church Board of Trustee Dave Babel said.
The church says it is teaming up with Calvary Episcopal Church on Ninth Street and Locust Street to help with volunteers at the new site. The shelter there opens January 1.
