Shelter Removes Animals from KC Animal Shelter
KANSAS CITY (AP) - A privately-run animal shelter is removing cats and dogs from Kansas City's animal shelter, which is seeking a new manager after it was accused of abusing the animals. Wayside Waifs removed about two dozen dogs and cats Tuesday and plans to take as many as it can. The city is looking for a new operator for the shelter, which has been run through a private partnership for the last two years. After allegations of abuse surfaced last month, the city said it was ending its contract with Veterinary Management Corp and veterinarian R. Wayne Steckelberg. The Kansas City Star reports that Steckelberg and shelter employees deny the allegations. The Missouri Veterinary Medical Board investigated but the probe was secret and a hearing on the matter was closed to the public.
