Some residents concerned as Central Pantry plans to change hours
COLUMBIA – People who use the Central Pantry Food Bank might have to adjust their schedules.
Starting in January 2018, the food bank will be closed on Mondays and open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
It will remain closed on Sundays.
Executive Director of the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri Lindsay Lopez said this change was necessary because it allows their employees a little more time off.
“If you can imagine what it’s like to be open for six days a week with only seven people working there,” Lopez said. “It made it difficult whenever someone was ill and had to be out for the day.”
Lopez said these changes will help the pantry will help better serve the community.
“Not only will this make us more effective and efficient with the resources that we have,” she said. “But it also means we can offer a better quality of life for the seven team members that we have staffed at the pantry.”
But some community members that frequently utilize the pantry are worried for those that may have difficulties coming to the pantry with the new changes.
“If they have jobs, it’s kind of like ‘Come to work or don’t come at all,’” said Travis Wayne Hedden, who goes to the pantry once a month. “So they may not get to pick the days off or on that they like because they are in that type of situation.”
But Lopez said the pantry has other resources for the community if they are worried.
“We work with a number of other partner agencies who provide food whether it be through a pantry or a congregate feeding site.”
