Southeast County coroner quits, 4 days after sentencing
PERRYVILLE (AP) — The coroner in Perry County has resigned four days after he was sentenced to probation and $80,000 in restitution for his conviction of financially exploiting an elderly or disabled person and stealing.
The Southeast Missourian reports that Perry County Coroner Herbert Miller's resignation took immediate effect. After being sentenced, he had insisted he had no plans to resign and will appeal his Oct. 16 conviction.
Miller owns Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville and had been coroner for two decades. The charges of financial exploitation were unrelated to his work as coroner.
Missouri statute requires the removal of any office holder convicted of a felony. The Perry County Commission had asked the Missouri attorney general's office to remove Miller.
