WASHINGTON D.C. - Former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 campaign, according to NBC News.

The FBI, with the help of other agencies, has been examining evidence of possible contacts, money transfers and business relationships between President Trump's associates and Russian officials, the report said.

The appointment was made by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who released the following statement:

“My decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted. I have made no such determination. What I have determined is that based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.’’

Mueller will lead prosecutors and FBI agents who are working on the investigation.

The Treasury Department, CIA, and other agencies have helped with the investigation and are expected to continue to do so, NBC reported.

The investigation is intended to find a possible American connection with Russia and discover how Russian intelligence services carried out the campaign of fake news and leaking of hacked emails that intelligence officials say was meant ot hurt Hillary Clinton and benefit Trump, NBC said.

Mueller led the FBI for 12 years under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
