COLUMBIA - The special prosecutor appointed to consider charges against a former Columbia police officer for using too much force against an incarcerated suspect filed charges Friday--just days before the first anniversary of the incident. Randolph County Prosecutor Michael Fusselman, acting as special prosecutor on this case, filed a third-degree assault charge against Robert R. Sanders of Columbia, the former officer. Police Chief Ken Burton fired Sanders last September of his role in the incident.
Sanders has maintained he did not use excessive force and claims other video shows he was helping relieve discomfort the suspect was experiencing before the shove is seen.
