ST. LOUIS (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon has announced that the St. Louis area will get about $550,000 to improve or develop trails. The awards that are from a federal grant channeled through the state's Department of Natural Resources Recreational Trails Program.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that 21 trails across the state will be for hiking or bicycling and will receive $1.5 million. Eleven trails for motorized activities will receive about $780,000. Nixon said Wednesday in St. Louis that he had no problems allocating funds for trails in tough economic times because the money is from competitive federal grants.

The money includes $100,000 for trail improvements in Forest Park in St. Louis and $100,000 in Sunset Hills for a trail segment along the Meramec River.
