St. Louis Co. officer hurt, suspect shot in Kmart confrontation
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis County police officer was hospitalized and a suspect was treated for injuries after a confrontation in which the suspect was shot in the leg.
The incident happened about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday outside a Kmart store. Police said the suspect was treated and released for a bullet graze wound to the leg. Police have not disclosed details of the officer's injury but said it is not considered life-threatening.
Store security contacted police when the man arrived, recognizing him from previous thefts. Police said the man tried to steal jewelry worth up to $40,000.
Officers surrounded the man's SUV in the parking lot. The suspect was shot while both he and the officer were inside the SUV.
Police tried to use a stun gun but said it didn't work.
