BALLWIN (AP) — St. Louis County police now carry the heroin antidote Narcan, a medication the chief believes can save several lives each year.

Starting Thursday, every St. Louis County police vehicle includes the nasal spray form of Narcan. Officers will use a syringe to spray the antidote into the nostrils of people suspected of overdosing on heroin or prescription opioids such as morphine, codeine and oxycodone.

Police Chief Jon Belmar said the county invested about $12,000 for the supply of Narcan. All commissioned police personnel are being trained in its use.

St. Louis County reported more than 90 heroin-related deaths last year, and more than 300 deaths over the past three years.

A state law passed in 2014 allows police departments to use Narcan, but so far, few do.
