St. Louis couple killed in Cole County crash after 66 years of marriage
BELLEFONTAINE NEIGHBORS, Mo. — A head-on crash in Cole County over the weekend killed a St. Louis County couple travelling home from the Ozarks after celebrating 66 years of marriage.
Bernard Steffel, 91, and Marilyn Steffel, 89, were killed after Damarius Rubin, 29, hit them head-on while fleeing from police on U.S. 54.
All three died at the scene.
Missouri State Highway Patrol said Rubin was in a stolen vehicle fleeing from Jefferson City police when he purposefully crossed the median into oncoming traffic on U.S. 54.
The Steffels's family is in shock after receiving the news, according to St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK. The couple has six children, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, KSDK reported.
The family spoke highly of Marilyn and Bernard. They said Marilyn was an angel while Bernard had a big personality, KSDK reported. Bernard was a Lieutenant Colonel for the Missouri National Guard and owner of the family construction business.
The Steffel family said they have unanswered questions about the incident and the cause of the police chase.
Jefferson City police said investigators would have updates later this week.
