St. Louis Residents Still in the Dark
Crews are working around the clock to restore electricity. But it could be several days before residents like Loretta Hill have air conditioning.
"I can't sleep at night. My room just now got cool, then it went back out," she said.
Hundreds of people are staying cool in emergency shelters across the city. Amie Harper and Lorraine Forshee left their homes after the heat became too intense.
"It was hot. It must've been 100 degrees and I have asthma so that made it worse," Harper said.
"The police came with the bus and asked us if we'd like to go to a cool shelter or stay at home, I voted for the shelter," noted Forshee.
More than 200 members of the Missouri National Guard are assisting in clean-up and well-being checks.
Cooler temperatures are expected this weekend, but authorities urge anyone needing relief to get to a city shelter immediately.
