St. Peters likely to keep red-light cameras off
ST. PETERS (AP) - Red-light cameras will likely remain off in St. Peters, even if the city wins a court case to overturn a St. Charles Countywide ban passed by voters in November.
Mayor Len Pagano told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that aldermen are expected to approve a resolution next week terminating the city's contract with an Arizona company that operates cameras. Pagano said aldermen are unanimous in their support of ending the contract.
But the mayor said the city and other plaintiffs will, on principle, continue the legal challenge. They contend that the ban that was put on the ballot by the St. Charles County Council violates state law giving municipalities exclusive control over regulation of traffic within their borders.
